Avoiding Stress in the College Application Process

Is it possible to find a university that suites you financially, socially, and academically? For some people the answer is yes, yet for many the answer is no. It is much more difficult for a student to get accepted to college today than it was for his or her parents years ago. There is much more competition than ever before. In the past, being accepted to college meant that a student met the university’s desired academic qualifications, However, today the game has completely changed. Now students must not only meet academic requirements, but they must also be well-rounded. Being well- rounded means performing community service, participating in extra-curricular activities and earning special awards in the students areas of interest. College applications have become much more time consuming and tedious; the Common Application itself is about 21 pages long. The whole process of applying to college is stressful for students, not to mention the stress parents face as rising tuition costs loom. As a student who just came out of that stressful period of college applications, I could talk forever about this topic. Here are some of my suggestions:

1. START EARLY- Start writing your admissions essays the summer after your junior year and look for schools you would be interested in applying.

2. CREATE A RESUME!!! Creating a resume listing all of your activities, community service, awards, jobs, etc. makes filling out applications and scholarships easier. You may even consider sending the college your resume as part of the application process. It looks very professional!

3. USE YOUR RESOURCES!!! Many high schools provide students with resources that assist in applying to college. However, they don’t always promote them. Go to your guidance office and sit down with your guidance counselor to figure out what the high school has to offer. My school used an online program called Naviance to organize my college admissions process and even my search for valuable scholarships.

The pressure on students and parents during the college admissions process can be very daunting. Luckily, you can start very early and if you manage your time correctly you will have plenty of opportunities to ask questions, and become more informed before you have to make the tough choices. Remember to use the resources your school provides and to look for more online. The college process does not have to be stressful for you. Students and parents alike can make the process stress-free and very exciting!
