One of the hardest things I have encountered when filling out college applications is deciding what major I would like to pursue.  I knew I wanted to go into business but what area in business?  So I started to lay out my strengths and my weaknesses.  I was good at math and not very creative; that’s as far as I could get but I narrowed down my options at least a little bit.  Another problem I encountered was my lack of knowledge in each major.  I didn’t really know exactly what major led to different careers so on and so forth.  To help other teens across America narrow down their options, here is a description of different majors and what they consist of:

Accounting- In this career, economic information is recorded, summarized, identified, and reported.  This career is a good fit for people who are good at math, and can analyze, compare and interpret facts and figures.  Communication is also key in this job because accountants must be able to communicate their results to clients and managers.  It is considered one of the best jobs in North America due to its high compensation and low stress levels.

Business Management-  Business management deals with the functional areas of a typical business.  This means understanding accounting, finance, human resources, production, information systems, and marketing.  A big part of business management is learning how to make beneficial and ethical decisions for the business.  Majoring in business management will help you learn how to manage a business by making decisions and predicting the future of that business.

Entrepreneurship-  Thinking of opening your own business? This career will teach you how to open and run your own business. It will teach you how to know when to take certain risks, use available resources, organize, and manage your business to be the most efficient and successful it can be.

Finance-  This career is perfect for people who are great at math.  This major will teach you how to manage money, transfer money, invest, and set budgets.  There are many areas that can branch from finance such as real estate and insurance.

Marketing- Are you creative or artistic?  Then this is the major for you because marketing it the art and science of getting people to buy stuff.  In this career, you will learn how to determine customer needs, consumer behavior, advertising, effective customer service and market segmentation.  To be good in this job you will need analytical skills, creativity, and logic.

Actuarial Science-  This is a very tedious and rigorous major.  It is heavily math dominant in which you must calculate the cost of all different kinds of risks.  Actuarial science is the mathematical and statistical foundation of all kinds of insurance such as life insurance, health insurance, property insurance, pension plans, etc.  Actuaries make high salaries and there aren’t many of them out there.

International Business-  This is learning standard business practices, ethics, and economics on a global level.  You will learn about international trade, investments in foreign markets.  Learning about other cultures, perspectives and laws is a critical part of this major.

Supply Chain and Information Systems- This major studies the field of supply chain network that organization use to acquire, produce, and deliver goods and services all over the world.  It deals with supply management, manufacturing, demand fulfillment, and service operations.  You will learn inventory flow scheduling and control, and the distribution of facilities and how to manage the transportation of goods

These are the most popular majors that business schools provide.  Many majors are similar yet some are very contrasting.  It is essential to narrow down your choices when you decide to go into a business major to prevent changing majors multiple times.
